By China Wonder Cars Team | 2026-07-28

Zhangjiajie, located in Hunan Province, is famous for its towering quartz sandstone pillars that inspired the floating mountains in the movie Avatar. This guide covers everything you need to know for an unforgettable 3-day trip.

Best Time to Visit

The best time to visit Zhangjiajie is April-October. Autumn (September-November) offers clear skies and colorful foliage. Avoid Chinese holidays (National Day Oct 1-7) when the park is extremely crowded.

Pro Tip: Visit on weekdays and arrive at the park entrance before 7:30 AM to beat the crowds and cable car lines.

How to Get There

Zhangjiajie has its own airport (DYG) with flights from major Chinese cities. High-speed trains connect Zhangjiajie West Station to Changsha (3h), Guangzhou (5h), and Shanghai (8h). From the station or airport, a private car transfer is the most convenient way to reach your hotel (30-60 minutes).

Day 1: Tianmen Mountain

Tianmen Mountain is known as the "Mountain of Heaven's Gate" and features the world's longest cable car (7,455m).

Important: Tianmen Mountain tickets sell out fast during peak season. Book at least 3-5 days in advance.

Day 2: Zhangjiajie National Forest Park (Yuanjiajie & Tianzi Mountain)

This is the core area with the famous Avatar pillars. The park is huge, so plan your route carefully.

Morning: Yuanjiajie

Afternoon: Tianzi Mountain

Day 3: Glass Bridge & Yellow Dragon Cave

Morning: Zhangjiajie Grand Canyon Glass Bridge

The world's highest and longest glass-bottomed bridge (430m long, 300m high). Not for the faint-hearted!

Afternoon: Yellow Dragon Cave

One of China's most beautiful karst caves with underground rivers and stunning stalactites.

Where to Stay

Getting Around the Park

The park has free shuttle buses connecting major areas, but lines can be long. For a more comfortable experience, consider a private car with driver who can navigate the park and wait for you at each stop.

Essential Tips

Zhangjiajie is a once-in-a-lifetime destination. With proper planning and a private driver, you can make the most of your time in this magical landscape.
