Should I stay on the mountain or in the village?
For the best experience, stay one night on the mountain top to catch the famous sunrise and sea of clouds. Hotels on the mountain are basic and expensive ($150-300/night). Alternatively, stay in Hongcun or Tangkou village at the foot of the mountain for better value and comfort. Most visitors do a 2-day trip: Day 1 - hike up and stay overnight, Day 2 - sunrise and descend.
How long does it take to climb Huangshan?

What is the best time to visit Huangshan?
Autumn (October-November) offers the clearest skies and colorful foliage. Spring (April-May) has blooming flowers. Winter (December-February) offers snow-covered peaks and fewer crowds but some trails may close. Summer can be cloudy but the sea of clouds is most spectacular after rain. Avoid Chinese national holidays (Oct 1-7, May 1-5) when crowds are extreme.
Can I visit Huangshan as a day trip from Hangzhou?
Yes, a day trip from Hangzhou is possible but rushed (2.5 hrs each way + 4-5 hrs on mountain = 10+ hrs). We recommend an overnight stay for a more comfortable experience. If doing a day trip, take the earliest cable car (7 AM) and focus on the main peaks. High-speed train from Hangzhou to Huangshan North takes 1.5 hrs, then 40 min by car to the mountain.
Are Hongcun and Xidi worth visiting?
Yes, both are UNESCO World Heritage sites and well worth visiting. Hongcun is famous for its crescent moon pond and ox-shaped layout (featured in Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon). Xidi is less crowded with beautiful ancestral halls. Allow 2-3 hours for each village. Many visitors combine both in one day with Tunxi Old Street in the evening.
