Tour A — Longji Rice Terraces Private Car Day Trip
Longji (literally "Dragon's Backbone") is a massive system of terraced rice fields carved into the mountains of Longsheng County, about 90 km north-west of Guilin. The terraces were started by the Zhuang and Yao peoples more than 600 years ago and still cascade over every visible ridge, sometimes rising more than 50 levels up a single hillside. There is no railway and no direct tourist bus that drops you at the viewpoints; the practical way to visit on your own terms is a private car from Guilin.
Step-by-Step Itinerary (Typical Timing)
Your driver meets you in the lobby of your Guilin hotel (or riverside guesthouse). Quick stop for water and snacks if needed.
The route climbs from the Guilin plain into the Longsheng hills. The last 30–40 km are winding mountain road; our drivers do this route regularly and drive at a relaxed pace. Photo stops at viewpoints on request.
Most visitors choose either Jinkeng Dazhai (Golden Rock Village) — the largest and most photographed area, with the Nine Dragons & Five Tigers and Seven Stars Accompanying the Moon viewpoints — or Ping'an Village, the older Zhuang village with the Seven Stars With the Moon and Nine Dragons Five Tigers platforms. A cable car is available at Jinkeng Dazhai for visitors who prefer not to climb; tickets are paid at the station and are not included in the car price. Allow 1.5–2.5 hours for walking and photos.
Farmhouse restaurants in Dazhai and Ping'an serve home-style Yao and Zhuang cooking — things like bamboo-tube rice, free-range chicken soup, stir-fried mountain vegetables, and cured pork. Meals are on your own account; your driver can recommend a clean, locally-loved spot.
Same route in reverse. If you have energy, a short stop at the Longji tea village or a roadside viewpoint is easy to add. Your driver waits at the lower parking area while you are up in the terraces.

Tour B — Li River "Car + Boat" Combo (Guilin to Yangshuo)
The Li River cruise from Guilin to Yangshuo is the single most famous thing to do in Guangxi — the same view printed on the back of the Chinese 20-yuan banknote. But the logistics confuse first-time visitors: the cruise boats leave from Zhujiang (Zhujian) Pier or Mopanshan (Mopanshan) Pier, about 40–60 minutes east of central Guilin, and they arrive in Yangshuo four hours later. There is no train back to Guilin after the boat, and the bus station is a walk away. Our "car + boat" service solves this for you: we drop you at the dock in the morning, you cruise, and our car meets you at the Yangshuo pier.
How the Car+Boat Link Works
- Morning pickup in Guilin (~07:00–07:30). Your driver drives you to either Zhujiang or Mopanshan Pier (~40–60 min depending on traffic and which pier your cruise departs from).
- You board the Li River cruise. Boats typically depart around 09:00–09:30 and take about 4 hours downstream, passing the karst peaks of Nine Horse Mural Hill, Yellow Cloth Shoal, and the Xingping bend.
- Our car waits for you in Yangshuo. While you are on the boat, the driver drives around to Yangshuo (the road route is shorter than the river) and parks at the Yangshuo pier.
- You step off the boat and straight into our car. From there you choose: explore Yangshuo (West Street, Yulong River, bike countryside), or ride back to Guilin with the driver (~1.5 hrs).
This is why it is called "car + boat": the car does the ground logistics on both ends, the boat does the sightseeing in the middle. You never carry luggage between terminals.

If you prefer to skip the four-hour boat, our Xingping–Yangshuo private car day drives you from Guilin straight to the Yangshuo area (~1.5 hrs). You can walk Xingping Old Town, photograph the 20-yuan banknote bend, ride a short bamboo raft on the Yulong River, cycle the countryside lanes, and stop at West Street in Yangshuo town before returning to Guilin. This is the most relaxed option for families with small children or for travelers who get motion-sensitive on longer boats.

Is the mountain road to Longji Rice Terraces safe / easy to drive?
The road from Guilin to Longji is paved and fully surfaced, but the last 30–40 km are winding mountain switchbacks with some elevation gain. It is perfectly safe for a local professional driver who does this route weekly, but it is not a flat expressway. If anyone in your group gets motion sickness, we recommend bringing a mild anti-nausea pill and sitting in the front seat.
Do I need to buy the Longji entrance ticket myself?
Yes. The Longji scenic-area entrance is not included in the private-car price. Your driver will drop you at the ticket gate and wait while you buy tickets. The on-site price changes by season; we advise you pay directly at the official window so you see the receipt. The cable car at Jinkeng Dazhai, if you choose it, is also paid on site.
How do I buy the Li River cruise ticket, and is it included?
The Li River cruise ticket is not included in the car price — we do not mark it up. You can book 3-star or 4-star cruise tickets directly, or ask us to arrange them for you at cost. We recommend booking 2–5 days ahead in peak season, because weekend and holiday boats sell out. Tell us your preferred boat class when you book the car, and we will confirm availability.
How does the "car + boat" handover actually work? Will we lose the driver?
No. The morning of your cruise, your driver takes you from your Guilin hotel to either Zhujiang or Mopanshan Pier (about 40–60 minutes). While you are on the 4-hour boat to Yangshuo, the driver drives around to Yangshuo on the highway and waits at the Yangshuo pier exit. When you step off the boat, your driver is there with the car — you do not need to call a taxi or find a bus. From Yangshuo you can either explore the town or ride back to Guilin.
Which terrace area should I choose — Jinkeng Dazhai or Ping'an?
Jinkeng Dazhai (Golden Rock) is the larger, more dramatic area with the famous Nine Dragons & Five Tigers viewpoint and a cable car, which is helpful if you don't want to climb. Ping'an is the older Zhuang village, a little smaller but quieter and closer to the main road. Most first-time visitors choose Jinkeng Dazhai for the views; return visitors often prefer Ping'an. Is this day trip suitable for families with children?
The Li River boat+car day (Tour B) is very family-friendly: you sit on a boat for four hours and the car does the rest. The Longji day (Tour A) involves uphill walking on stone paths, so small children need to be carried or supervised closely; a 6+ year old who likes hiking usually enjoys it. The cable car at Jinkeng Dazhai makes the mountain visit much easier for families.
How long is the Li River cruise, and which piers do boats use?
The full Guilin-to-Yangshuo cruise is about 4 hours downstream, typically departing around 09:00–09:30 and arriving in Yangshuo around 13:00–14:00. Boats depart from either Zhujiang Pier or Mopanshan Pier, depending on the boat class; both are about 40–60 minutes from central Guilin. We will tell you exactly which pier your boat leaves from the day before.
Can I combine Longji and the Li River cruise in one day?
It is possible but rushed — Longji is a full mountain day, and the Li River cruise has a fixed morning departure window. Most guests choose one per day, or take a 2-day trip: Longji on day one, Li River boat+car on day two. Ask us for a combined 2-day quote with the same driver.
