Do I need oxygen for Jade Dragon Snow Mountain?
The cable car reaches 4,506m (14,783 ft), so altitude sickness is possible. We recommend taking it slow, drinking water, and using oxygen if needed (available for purchase at the mountain). Our vehicles carry portable oxygen for emergencies. Most visitors do fine with the cable car, but those with heart conditions should consult a doctor first.
How long should I spend in Lijiang?
We recommend 2-3 days: Day 1 - Lijiang Old Town + Black Dragon Pool; Day 2 - Jade Dragon Snow Mountain + Blue Moon Valley; Day 3 - Shuhe/Baisha villages or Tiger Leaping Gorge day trip. The Old Town is best explored on foot in the evenings when it lights up. Lijiang is also a great base for trips to Dali (2 hrs) and Shangri-La (3 hrs).
Is Tiger Leaping Gorge worth visiting?
Yes, Tiger Leaping Gorge is one of the deepest gorges in the world (3,900m from river to peak) and absolutely spectacular. The Upper Gorge (most accessible) can be visited in a day trip from Lijiang (2 hrs each way + 2-3 hrs hiking). The full 2-day trek is for serious hikers. We recommend the Upper Gorge for most visitors - it has the famous Tiger Leaping Stone and dramatic views.
What is the best time to visit Lijiang?
Spring (March-May) and autumn (September-November) offer the best weather with clear skies and comfortable temperatures. Summer (June-August) is rainy but lush. Winter (December-February) is cold but sunny, with possible snow on Jade Dragon Snow Mountain. Avoid Chinese national holidays when the Old Town becomes extremely crowded.
Can I visit Lijiang and Dali together?
Yes, Lijiang and Dali are only 2 hours apart by car or high-speed train. A classic 3-4 day Yunnan itinerary: Day 1-2 - Lijiang (Old Town + Jade Dragon Snow Mountain); Day 3 - drive to Dali, visit Erhai Lake and Dali Old Town; Day 4 - Three Pagodas + Xizhou village.
